Sometimes reality is more entertaining than fiction.
Thanks to Yahoo! Movies, today we get the trailer for director Doug Liman's based-on-real-events spy thriller "Fair Game," starring Naomi Watts as outed CIA agent Valerie Plame and Sean Penn as her ambassador husband Joe Wilson.
If you're not familiar with the headline-grabbing story, here's the gist: Back in 2003, Wilson wrote an op-ed piece in the New York Times saying that the Bush administration had fudged facts about the existence of WMDs in Iraq in order to justify an invasion. Unwilling to let such a public kick to the groin go unpunished, the White House allegedly leaked Plame's identity to the press in an effort to discredit Wilson.
Since this is, based on a true story (or, more specifically on Plame's memoir "Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House"), we figured Liman wouldn't incorporate anything too over-the-top — such as Watts storming the White House and beating Bush into whimpering submission with a rolled-up copy of the Times, Bourne-style.
Still, Liman is the director of "The Bourne Identity" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith... so a few big action sequences were to be expected. But judging by the trailer, Liman decided not to go that route, opting instead for a smart, taut suspense flick. Guess we'll have to wait for his next movie to see Bush curled up on the Oval Office floor, crying in the fetal position.
